Sony announced on monday that the PS5’s Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature would start rolling out this week, and it’s already started showing up for some people (via HDTV test in Youtube). If your TV supports the feature, VRR can dynamically adjust the screen refresh rate, which can make games feel smoother to play with less tearing and jerking. While some games will be updated to support the feature, Sony also has a switch that will apply VRR to unsupported games.
If the VRR feature is available to you, you will be able to see it in the settings menu of the PS5. Go to Display & Video, Video Output, and then scroll down to the VRR section. Despite Sony saying on Monday that the feature would come with an update, there is no update to download. When I first turned on my PS5 this morning, the VRR section wasn’t there, but after rebooting my console and jumping to astro game roomshowed up.
Sony said on Monday that the following games will receive patches enabling VRR support “in the coming weeks,” and all of Insomniac’s PS5 titles already support the feature. according to a supporting document.
- astro game room
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- deadly loop
- Destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- dirt 5
- fallen god
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderland
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Midgard Tribes
My television, TCL Series 6 Google TV, it should support VRR, since it has two HDMI 2.1 ports, so I’ve been playing around with the feature. The only game I have that officially supports VRR right now is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apartand it definitely seemed smoother in Fidelity mode.
I also turned on the toggle to apply VRR on unsupported games and jumped to elden ring Y Sifu. I didn’t notice any major difference, but I don’t have a great eye for frame rate variability. we may have to wait digital foundry put that feature to the test to see how effective it is.
