Mumbai, April 20: A whirlwind opening partnership of 83 between David Warner (60 not eliminated) and Prithvi Shaw (41 from 20 balls) sealed a nine-wicket win for Delhi Capitals against Punjab Kings in IPL 2022 at Brabourne Stadium here on Wednesday.
After the bowlers put on an impressive show to beat Punjab by just 115, Warner and Shaw’s fourth consecutive over-fifty position saw the chase quickly completed with 57 balls to spare.
Warner and Shaw came out with all guns blazing mentioning their partnership’s half-century in 3.3 overs, the fastest fifty by a team in IPL 2022. Shaw struggled early against Vaibhav Arora’s in-swing, but took three limits in the opening finished.
The dynamic duo then took a limit each from Kagiso Rabada to pile on more misery in Punjab. Arora came under further attack when Warner charged him for back-to-back limits while Shaw hit him hard for six. Warner took two more bounds from Rabada before racking up 17 runs with Shaw in the Arshdeep Singh opening to effectively seal the fate of the match on the power play.
After the power play, Rahul Chahar broke up the opening tier of 83 runs as Shaw scrambled hard, only long enough to balance himself and take the catch over his left shoulder. Warner continued to deal with the limits, hitting a deep fence in the middle of Rabada and then clearing the same region with a slow sweep.
Warner recorded a hat-trick of fifty in the tournament with four directed at third man Nathan Ellis before ending the innings with another four via Chahar’s half-wicket to seal a resounding victory for Delhi.
Short scores: Punjab Kings 115 in total in 20 overs (Jitesh Sharma 32, Mayank Agarwal 24; Axar Patel 2/10, Lalit Yadav 2/11) lost to Delhi Capitals 119/1 in 10.3 overs (David Warner 60 out, Prithvi Shaw 41; Rahul Chahar 1/21) by nine wickets
