Lauren Gardner, Microsoft’s director of global talent acquisition, has reviewed thousands of resumes over her 31 years working for the tech giant.
When Gardner is evaluating a potential hire, there’s one “red flag” he always looks for: candidates who are “unique in terms of their experiences.”
Your resume should demonstrate a willingness to learn or take career risks, “even if you’ve had the same job throughout your career,” says Gardner. CNBC Do It.
Hiring managers don’t want to see a “perfect resume,” he adds. “We’re looking for people who are motivated to constantly learn and grow,” she says. “We are not looking for know-it-alls, we are looking for apprentices of everything”.
Even if you’ve had the same job title, or stayed with the same company, throughout your career, it’s important to show that you’re always looking to develop new skills and what new strengths or lessons you’ve learned. of your experiences.
You may have similar responsibilities from job to job, but you should volunteer to lead new projects, take advantage of working with different teams, or even get involved in an employee resource group, for example, says Gardner. Including specific keywords like “growth” or “learning” is helpful, she adds, when describing work experiences on your resume to catch the attention of a hiring manager.
There’s another “green flag” Gardner looks for on a candidate’s resume in addition to demonstrating a growth mindset: an “interests” section. This can include a short sentence about his values, a bulleted list of hobbies, or five words that describe him, to name a few examples.
