New Delhi, April 27: The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Union of India and State/Union Territory Governments to respond to interim suggestions made by Amicus Curiae Gopal Sankaranarayanan on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on ‘Sports Literacy’ which may be included in litigation.
To make sports a fundamental right in India, Kanishka Pandey filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court, after which the high court ordered the Center and the states to file an affidavit on this to see whether ‘Sports Literacy’ can be included in the litigation.
The PIL was made by petitioner Kanishka Pandey, challenging the focus on the term ‘Sports Literacy’ by Amicus.
After the Supreme Court ordered the Center and States to file an affidavit on these issues, former Olympian Ashok Kumar Dhyan Chand hoped that sports would soon become a Fundamental Right in India.
“I am hopeful that sport will soon become a Fundamental Right,” he said.
“The petitioner has preferred to file the Petition before this Honorable Court to declare the Right to Sport as a Fundamental Right. The reasons behind seeking such instructions from the court were, to promote the sporting culture in the country, build character and personality of citizens, to make India a sporting nation,” Kanishka said in his petition.
“Sport has the potential to resolve various administrative and social disputes, including physical, mental, personality development, medical healing, social, communal and religious harmony. The promotion and inclusion of sport in school The university curriculum ( not merely extracurricular) has the tendency to change the mentality of our children from an early age,” said the petitioner.
