Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has offered to resign, a government official says, as protests over the island’s economic crisis turn violent.
“The prime minister sent his letter of resignation to the president,” the official said Monday, declining to be identified.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the younger brother of the embattled prime minister.
Rajapaksa’s offer to resign came hours after supporters of his party stormed a major protest venue in Colombo, attacked anti-government protesters and clashed with police, who used tear gas and water cannons to drive them back. .
