Suncheon: April 8 (IANS) Former world champion PV Sindhu and silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the semi-finals after winning their respective men’s and women’s singles events at the 2022 Korea Open Badminton Championships at Palma Stadium, here on Friday.
Sindhu, ranked seventh in badminton, defeated world number 11 Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand 21-10, 21-16, while Srikanth posted a 21-12, 18-21, 21-12 victory against the South Korean Son Wan Ho in the quarterfinals of the BWF Super 500 event.
Sindhu, who also won the Swiss Open final last month against Busanan Ongbamrungphan, dominated the match from the start and won the first game convincingly.
Despite putting in a better performance in the second game, there was no respite for the Thai midfielder against the two-time Olympic medalist as the Indian ace cruised to victory in 44 minutes. This was Sindhu’s 17th win against Busanan Ongbamrungphan out of the 18 times the two ferries have met.
Provided there is no upset, the Indian midfielder will likely face World No. 4 An Seyoung of South Korea next. PV Sindhu had lost to the South Korean ferry in last year’s BWF World Tour Finals summit clash.
In the men’s singles, world No. 12 Srikanth entered the match with a 4-7 head-to-head record against Son Wan Ho of South Korea, who is ranked No. 78. Former World No. 1 Son Wan Ho, who has been out of action for most of the last two years, lost the match in one hour and two minutes to the Indian sixth seed.
Kidambi Srikanth, also a former World No. 1, will face the winner of the match between third seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and eighth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semi-finals.
However, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a narrow 20-22, 21-18, 20-22 loss against South Korea’s Kang Minhyuk and Seo Seungjae in the men’s doubles quarterfinals. In women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy will face South Korea’s Eom Hye Won and Bo Ryeong Kim.
