India, the highest ranked team in the world, has been placed in Group A with Pakistan, Japan and hosts Indonesia and will play Pakistan in the last match of the opening day schedule.
Group B includes Malaysia, South Korea, Oman and Bangladesh in the eight-team competition that will take place from May 23 to June 1. The competition will kick off with a Group B match between Malaysia and Oman on May 23.
India, the defending champion at the continental championship, will take on Asian Games gold medalists Japan Japan in their second match on May 24 and take on host Indonesia on May 26 at the GBK Sports Complex Hockey Stadium in Jakarta. , to complete their league commitments.
The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the Super 4s Pool, whose top two teams will compete in the final on June 1, while the third and fourth teams will feature in the bronze medal match.
India is the most successful nation in the Asian Cup, having won the title three times. India and Pakistan last met in the 2021 Asian Champions Trophy, which India won 4-3 to claim the bronze medal.
The Asian Cup takes place after a gap of two years as it was postponed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The top three teams at the end of the Asian Cup will qualify for next year’s FIH Hockey World Cup, which will be held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. India has already qualified for the World Cup as the host.
