Goa, May 11: Two second-half goals from Rayan Menezes and Jovial Dias helped FC Goa round out their campaign after recording a 2-0 victory over Young Champs in the inaugural edition of the RF Development League with their fourth victory of the tournament here on Wednesday. .
Overall, Dev Team head coach Deggie Cardozo made two changes to his playing XI which started in the win against Mumbai City earlier this week. Danstan Fernandes replaced Brison Fernandes while Delton Colaco took the place of Velroy Fernandes.
The Boys in Orange started well and could have opened the scoring in the first minute had Mevan Dias’ shot not missed by a narrow margin.
His next big chance came in the 17th minute. Vasim Inamdar made a brilliant run before passing the ball to Jovial, whose shot sailed over the crossbar.
FC Goa goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari came into action for the first time in the 22nd minute, when he made an impressive one-handed save to deny FRYC. He made five more saves during the match in another noteworthy performance.
Striker Rayan was initially struck by misfortune in the 36th minute, when his long-range attempt near the halfway line hit the crossbar. The center-back made amends in the 77th minute.
A Danstan free-kick from deep was deflected by the FRYC goalkeeper, but the ball fell into the hands of Mevan, who returned it to the area. By then the keeper was off his line, so all Rayan had to do was put his shot into the net, which he did with ease to give the Gaurs a deserved lead.
FC Goa then doubled their lead in the 88th minute through Jovial. A long ball from Hrithik flew into the opponent’s box and Jovial took advantage of the resulting confusion to beat the keeper and put the ball into the net.
The Gaurs thus made it three wins in a row and moved up to third place in the league table with 13 points. With the victory, Deggie Cardozo’s boys also concluded their campaign in the RF Development League on a positive note.
