Mumbai, April 10: A clinical bowling performance spearheaded by spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (4/41) and pacer Trent Boult (2/30) helped Rajasthan Royals beat Lucknow Super Giants by three runs in a low-scoring thriller in Match 20 of IPL 2022 at Wankhede Stadium here. on Sunday.
Boult landed two powerful shots in the first over, sending back skipper KL Rahul (0) and Krishnappa Gowtham (0) in the first two deliveries of the LSG innings and Chahal took over the good work in the middle overs, when LSG fell to 5-74 in 12 overs and although Quinton de Kock (39) held off one end for some time and Marcus Stoinis (38 not out of 17) landed some hard shots in the last two overs, they were unable to drag Lucknow to the victory line. .
LSG needed 13 runs in the last six innings, but debutant Kuldeep Sen, a young right-arm pacemaker from Madhya Pradesh, pitched magnificently to deny Stoinis the chance to become the hero.
Earlier, a brilliant late attack from Shimron Hetmyer (59 not out of 36 balls) and a tactical change from R Ashwin, who became the first player in IPL history to retire, helped Rajasthan Royals to a modest 165 /6 in 20 overs. .
Hetmyer and Ashwin teamed with battling Rajasthan at 67/4 and collected 68 runs in partnership for the fifth wicket to carry their side to safety.
With only 10 deliveries to go, Ashwin ‘retired’ after striking Hetmyer. The West Indies batsman scored three sixes, two of them off successive balls from AVesh Khan, as the Royals added 78 runs in the last five overs. They continued to defend that small total thanks to their bowling depth.
